Head to the old trading centre of Bur Dubai, on the opposite side of Dubai Creek from Deira, and discover a number of colourful fabrics in the Textile Souk. You can skim through an endless selection of raw silk, cotton, and embroidered fabrics at this market. You’re bound to find the exact print and color you’re looking for among the reels of cloth, or hunt out sparkling sequins, buttons, and lace. Take a traditional abra water taxi across the Creek to get here — the ride costs just one dirham and lets you experience the historic neighbourhoods from the water. It’s best to visit early in the morning or in the evening — and remember to barter. Afterwards, treat yourself to an Arabic delicacy at the Bayt Al Wakeel restaurant, located next to the abra station.

Food Scene

Next to the Textile Souk, in one of Dubai’s oldest buildings (built of mud and coral and wood beams circa 1935), Bayt Al Wakeel houses a maritime museum and a heritage restaurant with an outdoor deck rising over the lively Dubai Creek. Its authentic atmosphere draws crowds who enjoy Levantine and Emirati classics like lamb kebabs, seafood and citrus-splashed salads, and always finds them staying for the view. The deck is an ideal perch to watch abras and dhows glide over the waters while seagulls caw and swoop. If you look across the water you'll see the Burj Nahar, one of three historic watchtowers used to guard Dubai from attack by desert tribes. Order a fresh juice and imagine the city before skyscrapers sprouted and glamour ruled the day.

Sightseeing

A visit to the stunning Jumeirah Mosque, the only mosque in Dubai that welcomes non-Muslim guests six days a week, will change that (women are asked to wear a scarf when visiting). One of the most beautiful landmarks in Dubai, the Jumeirah Mosque, which is large enough to hold up to 1,200 worshippers, was built entirely from white stone in the medieval Fatimid tradition, with towering twin minarets framing a large central dome. When it’s lit up at dusk, the intricate artistry and true beauty are highlighted. Make the most of your visit by joining a tour hosted by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding and learn about the Emirati culture and religion in a relaxed, casual, and open atmosphere.
