Arts & Culture

The pueblo culture is the strength and soul of New Mexico. Historic, and rich in tradition, this is the place to learn about the real New Mexico. Native dancers come in every weekend at noon, as well as other events held during the rest of the week. For a treat, eat at the café, which boasts the best chile relleño in town!

The Acoma Pueblo is rich in heritage, and history. The oldest pueblo in continuous use by Acoma tribe members, the tour gives you a unique insight into the takeover by the Spanish, to their eventual over throw, and the culture that continues the lineage today. About 90 minutes west of ABQ, via I-40.

This little gem is a tucked away piece of history in the less traveled south valley of Albuquerque. Home of the Gutierrez-Hubbell family, this is one of the original establishments in New Mexico and served as a trading post and farm for over a century. Definitely worth seeing: part of the old farm, along with the irrigation ditch are still in use. A great place for kids to run around!

Vegan, vegetarian, and meat-eaters are all served here. This restaurant is for those who are health conscious but still like hearty fare. Eat outside in the "Petio" where you can sit in the shade of the trees and the wisteria. Farina Alto is my favorite place. It's a drive away, across town to the NE Heights, but, not very far. They have wonderful food with a fresh, italian style, though healthy and innovative. My favorite things is that you can get a small or a large portion, meaning you can have a big salad or a small one, a full portion of their rich penne or a small one. A great place for drinks and pizzas, too, Farina Alto is a solid bet.

Another innovative place, with locally sourced fresh food, and worthwhile specials of the day. Fork & Fig is across town in the Uptown area of Albuquerque. The chef doesn't have a deep fat fryer or a freezer, which means he's buying the food each day, and coming up with amazing specials. With small tables, this is best a place to go for parties of 2-4, especially in the colder months when the patio is closed.

There's a small, but vibrant asian community here in ABQ. One of the surprises is Magokoro, a Japanese café where every dish is 'food from the heart.' They have a lunch and a dinner menu, with the lunch featuring typical foods from cutlets to terriyakis, and it's at night when they bring out their noodle dishes, with Ramen that outshines anything I've found in So Cal.
