Food Scene

On the corner of Morocco Street and Bermondsey Street sits the little Spanish haven José. This intimate and bustling restaurant transports you from dreary London to Barcelona as you tuck into delicious tapas. What José lacks in space, they make up for in taste with their select but impressive menu. There’s something for everyone (surprisingly, even vegetarians.), and, believe us, the queues are well worth it.

Pizarro is named after Chef Pizarro’s grandfather, who owned a bar, Pizarro, in Talaván. Enjoy a casual setting overlooking St Mary Magdalen from the communal table or bar, or the formal restaurant seating in the back for a more intimate gathering. Regardless of where you sit, the food is just a delicious.

Recent renovation work has given Village East an even more sleek and fresh interior. This old favourite of Bermondsey serves up perfectly executed dishes by the masterful Toby Stuart and team. Mixing European and New York influences creates wonderful flavour combinations, such as their famed crab mac n cheese. This is the perfect setting for a slow and steady weekend brunch.

Duck under the arches behind Maltby Street and you'll arrive at Druid Street, a much more rough-and-ready street-food market. On this stretch, signs are few and far between so it helps to follow your nose. Pojang serves up authentic Korean street-food, Decatur has the best oyster po boys and Rock My Bowl's smoothie bowls manage to make breakfast genuinely exciting. The revolving weekly stalls mean you'll find new vendors every time. On our last visit we discovered Jake's Soul Spread selling incredible jams on their Druid Street debut. The treacle-thick salted butter with honey even comes with a soul and funk breakfast soundtrack.

On the southern end of Bermondsey Street, Hej is a favourite of freelance writers and the start-up crowd who are drawn by its excellent coffee, cinnamon buns and sleek shared workspaces. Scandi cool permeates the barn-like interior with comfy couches and a wooden moose head mounted on a stripped-back wall. The details mischievously toe the line between charming and cutesy: mini jars of Jelly Babies on the tables, copies of Kinfolk on the window ledge and a collaboration with florist Dante Carmassi that leaves the doorstep lined with buckets of hydrangeas and peonies (you'll even get a free drink when you buy a bouquet).

Drinks & Nightlife

This German craft brewery located inside the food hall at Mercato Metropolitana apparently prides itself on using water distillation and mineralization technology to produce its brews. The hops, malts and recipes are sourced from Steinbach Bräu, a 400-year-old Bavaria based brewery, which produces all its beer by hand. German Kraft’s drinks menu includes the Heidi Blonde lager, Hopfen Kiss pale ale and Edel Weis wheat beer. Most are served fresh out of the tank or from reusable containers to keep things sustainable. As well as seeing the brewing process in action, punters can order German-style nosh if they’re feeling peckish.

Beneath the popular tourist spot of London Bridge, near the entrance to London dungeons, is the secretive pub The Mug House. This small, dark pub is a uniquely traditional spot with an old stone floor, draft ale, and deep leather armchairs to sink into after a long day. Their house ale comes served in rustic tankards, and the background folk music echoing through the candlelit chambers with arched ceilings teleports you 100 years back in time. Plus, the secretive location means easy service even at peak times.

As one of London’s oldest pubs, The Mayflower truly is the hidden goldmine of Rotherhithe. Secretly mixed amongst a jungle of housing estates is this traditional, wood-lined, riverside pub. The unique age of the inside bar and original fireplace is perfect for a cold winter’s night, but the outside decking makes The Mayflower a true all-seasons pub. The decking area hangs over the Thames and provides striking views of the industrial docklands area, but watch out for the splashes of waves that shoot upwards through the floor; they can ruin your day or improve your friends’.
