The food is ok, but the view is stunning. On the grounds of Adventures on the Gorge (whitewater outfitter plus more). It is a great place to see the gorge and enjoy a beer.

This is a casual spot but with incredible appeal. Delicious sandwiches and salads and fun beer options. There is often a wait here, but the upstairs portion serves drinks while you wait and kids or adults can spend time in the adjacent park.

Cathedral is an iconic spot in Fayetteville. The breakfast and lunch options are tasty, and the ambience is cozy. You will definitely encounter many fellow adventurers fueling up on calories and caffeine before they start the day.

Parks & Nature
This is a must-hike! Fabulous views of the gorge and bridge. Take your camera. Use caution as you descend through the rhododendron tunnel, you are essentially walking out on a finger of a rock with steep drop-offs on either side. Hold hands of small children, and take it very slowly. The hike is approximately 3.5 miles round-trip from the trailhead parking lot.

A great hike to see the views of the gorge with a shorter time/distance commitment to reach the overlook (special view) than that of Long Point Trail. Use caution when approaching any overlooks. If you don't like heights, you can stay on the main trail the whole hike and never feel "exposed." Drive across the New River Gorge Bridge on US 16, then take the second right onto Lansing-Edmond Road. Follow it about 1.5 miles to the parking area (small brown "National River" sign on the side of the road). There is another parking area further down the road that accesses the trail from the other end if the first parking lot is full.

Sightseeing
This bridge used to be the only point of connection across the vast New River Gorge. The drive down to the bridge is sometimes hair-raising sharp turns, but it is worth it. Once you drive across the low Fayette Station Bridge, turn into the parking area just beyond for some great views of whitewater rafters and kayakers battling the rapids. There is also a nice little beach area for kids to dip into (with appropriate supervision, of course). The rocks alongside the river are nice for picnics as well.

Great overview of history of the bridge and everything else. You can pick up an audio CD for a "guided driving tour" of the road down to the New River and the Fayette Station bridge. Nice (even if dated) movie to watch in the theater. Good for an introduction to the area or a rainy day outing.

A dear friend founded this amazing guide service housed inside Waterstone Outdoors. Elaina is the reason I started climbing and built the confidence to share the sport with my friends and family. She has since expanded her business west and is not in Fayetteville as often, but her team here at New River Mountain Guides remains my top pick for guide services. Half-day up to multi-day experiences are available for all levels, including beginners. They provide all of the gear. https://www.newriverclimbing.com/

Ben Franklin is sort of like traveling back in time, but it is so worth the journey. They have fabulous arts & crafts supplies, basic household goods, snacks, drinks, bulk food items and basic groceries.

Waterstone Outdoors is a veritable hub of outdoorsy energy. Locally-owned and deeply rooted in the community, it is one of our favorite things about the area. Maura & Kenny source all the gear you need for climbing, hiking, yoga, and water sports. Their ath-leisure wear is also very hip. The staff are always friendly and happy to give recommendations for outings & adventures. They all know SO much about the area and their sports. Be sure to check out upstairs for shoes, more gear and the clearance rack!
