Spec's Downtown liquor store is 40,000 square feet of every type of booze you could want. It has a deli and unique/international foods to purchase. On weekends, there are tons of free samples (food and booze). Even if you're only going to get a six pack of Lone Star, it's worth checking out the selection just for fun.

Whole Foods on Waugh is the closest grocery store to the studio. It is about a 15 minute walk. While prices for everyday groceries can be expensive, it's a great place to go for a quick bite to eat or some essentials. They also have a beer & wine bar where you can sit and enjoy a glass (while you snack on your purchases) or grab something to drink while you shop!

BB's is a Houston staple for fast-casual Tex-Cajun cuisine. Serving traditional Southern Louisiana-style cooking fused with a Texas twist, BB’s created its very own homemade food concept called “Tex-Orleans cooking.” They have a large menu complete with traditional cajun dishes like po'boys, gumbo and crawfish etouffee, along with their Texas twist dishes like their can't miss Tex-Cajun fries, fish tacos, and fried pickles.

Gyu-kaku is a super fun, authentic Japanese bbq place that originated and still exist all over Japan. Make a reservation several days in advance, tables fill up fast. You will have a grill at your own table, where you are in charge of cooking your own meat, fish, and vegetables. There are also lots of side dishes, ramen, udon, rice bowls, dumplings, salads, to enjoy along with your bbq. The hot wings are a must-try appetizer! It truly feels like you are at a local bar in Japan.

If small plates/tapas and great wine is your thing, Oporto is the place to go. It is mostly Portuguese, with a great wine selection, beer and cocktails as well. The interiors are gorgeous and the service is friendly. And it's very close to the house! You will be able to walk to several bars afterwards and even Fluff Bake Bar for dessert, I have listed that in the guidebook as well.

Common Bond is a must-try if you love a good breakfast pastry. The stars of the bakery case include the Almond Croissant, Jam Croissant, Kugelhopf, and Kouign-amann. But they also have rotating items that are incredible, last week we got this Nutella filled flaky donut item that was topped with chocolate ganache. In addition to breakfast sweet pastries, they have amazing rustic loaves of bread, breakfast dishes such as Biscuits and Gravy, Quiche Lorraine, Lox Tartine, as well as lunch and dinner items like flatbreads, burgers, Beef Bourguignon and salads. They also serve excellent coffee, espresso, beer, and wine. All in a central location in Montrose, but prepare yourself for a line!

From the website: Maize (or Corn) has been the backbone of America’s food culture for centuries—before colonists even landed in New England. Puritan settlers, while assumably straight-laced teetotalers, still enjoyed their hooch and imbibed often. Corn, introduced to them by Native Americans, became the most readily-available fermentable grain. The namesake for the joint, 8-Row Flint Corn is likely believed (although undocumented) to be the variety of corn that was first ground into a meal, then mashed, fermented and distilled into American whiskey. Dent corn, grown in the South, is now the industry standard for making bourbon. Naturally, we opened a bar named after the source of two of our favorite things: whiskey and tacos.

Favor the Kind
642 Yale St
Formerly known as The Gypsy Wagon, this Heights Mercantile shop recently changed its name but continues to offer laid-back caftans and chunky jewelry, including manager LeeAnn Sloan’s favorite: the vibrant, eye-catching Dolan prints exclusive to the store.
If Parks and Rec’s Ron Swanson lived in Houston, this is where he’d go for anything he couldn’t carve himself. In between the motorcycle, bike, and skateboard gear, the shop stocks brands that focus on quality and craftsmanship, from your grandpa’s Levi’s jeans and Red Wing work boots to newer brands inspired by the same classic style, such as made-in-Detroit Shinola watches, glasses by Raen, and life/after/denim shirts.
