Food scene
This is our favorite Vietnamese food in DC and we are lucky that we can walk here from our place! It is extremely casual - in the first floor of a row house with only a handful of tables inside (no alcohol sales here) - and service is efficient. They have fantastic/as-good-as-in-Hanoi bun cha (pork meatballs in garlicky broth with a side of noodles and fresh herbs and sprouts for dipping), which we have not found anywhere else in DC. The soursop smoothie with boba is also a nice treat. Bun DC just started serving pho (woo hoo!) and it also has bun bo hue, another type of Vietnamese noodle soup (its sister restaurant, Pho Viet, is also in our guidebook and is great for pho). Call for carry out (you can find their menu online) and it’ll be ready in about the 10 minutes it takes to walk there.

Really great Indian food, particularly the appetizers and the thali meals. We really like the bhel puri, keema pav, chicken saag, malai kofta, and any of the biryanis. There are several good restaurants on the same block!

Nice, casual Oaxacan restaurant with creative (not-just-margaritas) cocktails and great mole. The owners also own Taqueria Habanero up the street. Favorite dish is the pork ribs with mole negro. They serve everything with fresh-made tortillas!

Perpetually packed but the line moves fast and the bagels are awesome. Good for takeaway but if you don’t mind rubbing elbows with your neighbor, a spot usually opens up to dine in (*currently only online orders for pickup*). They now have locations in Capitol Hill and Georgetown as well.

In The Line hotel (along with Spoken English - also highly recommended!), this lobby bar and restaurant is a must for dessert and drinks or high tea. If you’re having dinner don’t miss the knife-cut noodles. Genius pastry chef Pichet Ong has moved on, but the new pastry chef (who came over from Maketto) is known for her creative desserts and is keeping the rotating “vacation cake” on the menu. They have a morning and daytime cafe (Cafe Spoken) and have shifted their menu to Japanese kissaten (cafe) staples - think katsu sandwiches, Japanese curry, and omurice - since they re-opened for dining, but the food is consistently good. They are currently open for dine-in and takeout, and also have started using the front area as a dining patio at dinner time.

Feels like Japan when you step inside - we prefer happy hour and snacks at the bar (the hand-drawn menu is hyper-seasonal, but anything with fresh tuna is great and the kalbi is fantastic). Don’t sleep on the potato salad - it’s an izakaya staple and they do it very well when it’s on the menu. You can make reservations online for indoor dining.

A DC institution that’s been around since the 1940s (Martin Luther King, Jr. even ate here!). Reasonably priced diner and soul food just down 11th St. from the Airbnb. Our favorite DC ramen. In true Tokyo style, you line up here to wait for a table, which will likely be the large communal table that takes up most of the small basement space. Archipelago (Lost Island is the upstairs space but we recommend the main bar/restaurant) is a fun tiki bar with really great Hawaiian-Sichuan food (ham and cheese sliders are addictive, Dan Dan noodles and Sichuan eggplant are larger, delicious shareables, and the literal tower of nachos is highly recommended for a group). Arrive early (jazz is from 5:00-8:30pm), grab a spot on the ledge of the fountain so you can dip your feet in, and get a pitcher of sangria. Larger groups can bring blankets and set up picnics in the grass (BYO food is allowed but the guards will check bags for alcohol).

One of the most popular museums on the Mall, and for good reason! After a long hiatus, the new-and-improved dinosaur hall has reopened and is a must-visit.

The most beautiful building in DC - combine this with visits to the Supreme Court and the Capitol. Make sure to get to the reading room viewing platform - there is often a line for this. Make this a Saturday trip (along with the Supreme Court) if you are weekend travelers - the Library is closed Sundays!

A “village in the city,” this is one of DC’s most diverse neighborhoods and is a great place to walk and dine - particularly for those who have been to DC and have already seen most of the more-frequented tourist spots. Just up 16th from Meridian Hill Park, make a diagonal left on Mt. Pleasant St., the main drag. Our favorites on the street: Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream for dessert (blueberry sour cream crumble and lemon curd coriander streusel are our favorites!), Mola for tapas (happy hour 5:30-7:30 Tuesday to Saturday and all day Sunday), Elle for coffee and pastries by day and dinner at night, Raven Grill for beers (this is a total dive), Suns Cinema for an indie theater experience, and Sabydee for hole-in-the-wall Laotian food (the Nam Kao/crispy rice salad is the way to go). At the top of the street, turn left on Park St. to see historic homes (this will also lead to Rock Creek Park if you are looking to hike).

Great for socially distant walks from the zoo up to Tregaron Conservancy, a small nature reserve with trails and a pond full of loud bullfrogs.

A large park in DC great for hiking and trail running. Walkers and leisure bikers can use Beach Drive, which is closed to car traffic on weekends and holidays (and has recently been car-free every day due to city-wide COVID regulations). Walk, ride, or drive from the Airbnb - just ask us if you need help getting there!

A very cool, unmarked bar in the basement of a townhome near Howard Theater. Cocktails are creative and well-balanced! They are open during COVID - reservations must be made online for seating on their new back patio.

This place gets a lot of hype, and for good reason. Named Best American Cocktail Bar in 2017, Columbia Room offers three distinct experiences for guests: the punch garden/outdoor deck, the Spirits Library inside with a la carte drink options, and the ticketed/reservations-only cocktail tasting menu in the private bar room. The cocktail tasting experience changes seasonally and is a real treat for visitors and locals alike.

Fantastic cocktail bar frequented by locals for an after-work drink. The menu changes monthly and there is usually a tiki option. Food is extremely limited here, but there are great dinner options nearby on Connecticut (like Bistrot du Coin just down the street for authentic French).

Rather than visiting the restaurant in this charming Dupont hotel (although brunch is very popular here), we highly recommend a cocktail in their bar/parlor - particularly on cold days so you can enjoy the fireplace. It’s like sitting in your living room, but fancier. They have live music on occasion.

While most people flock to Iron Gate for their high-end dinner or for small, Greek-inspired plates in the garden, we LOVE the carriage house bar for cocktails and a snack. Right across from Tabard Inn for a mini-cocktail crawl.

Excellent for food as well, Bar Charley is a local favorite on the 18th street strip in north Dupont. They have tiki cocktails (some on tap), as well as other creative and traditional cocktails. Even during COVID, they are doing daily happy hour (until 6:30) and all-night happy hour on Mondays. They have recently expanded their outdoor dining area (outdoor seating only for now). Their sweet corn and jalapeño fritters are a wonderful snack to accompany your cocktails.
