Outdoor Activities
We LOVE hiking in GCM State Park. There are lots of ups and downs for elevation, and your body will feel it by the end. If you follow the Superior Hiking Trail going east, you'll catch views of Lake Superior (if you hike far enough ~7 miles roundtrip). If you're looking for a more relaxing hike, check out the Benson Lake Trail loop (.8 miles). State parks pass or day pass required for parking.

Over 50 different classes and activities are available at Wolf Ridge. Class subjects include environmental science, cultural history, contemporary environmental issues, personal growth, team building, and outdoor recreation. There is no cost to use their trails, but they ask all drop-in visitors to check in with their office inside the Administration Building.

Bring a variety of clothes.
Layers layers layers! Up here, you're better off over-packing than under-packing. The climate is more akin to Seattle than Minneapolis.
Summer-Sun and rain gear, long sleeves/pants for insects. When you're hiking, just keep moving to keep the bugs away. The mosquitos all but disappear come August 1st.
Winter-WARM clothes, snow boots, gloves, hat, neck gaiter, ice cleats (i.e. Yak Traks), indoor shoes, slippers.
Fall/Spring-Cozy clothes and rain gear, including waterproof boots. The days can vary from 70 degrees with sunshine to foggy with rain, sometimes all in the same day.

Our home is located on a maintained dirt road, so getting here is doable in a 2WD vehicle. 4WD or chains are recommended in the wintertime due to icy conditions on all roads.

St. Urho's Day (March 16)
St. Urho's Day is celebrated on March 16th, the day prior to St. Patrick's Day.
The legend of St. Urho says he chased the grasshoppers out of ancient Finland, thus saving the grape crop and the jobs of Finnish vineyard workers. He did this by uttering the phrase: "Heinäsirkka, heinäsirkka, mene täältä hiiteen" (roughly translated: "Grasshopper, grasshopper, go to Hell!"). His feast is celebrated by wearing the colors Royal Purple and Nile Green, representing grapes and grasshoppers, respectively.

Check out some traditional Finnish music, a local craft market, and entry to the historic heritage site. Check out the free arts and crafts for the kids and live demonstration by a blacksmith. Entry to the event is free.

Household Oddities
-Propane smell when you start the oven. It dissipates after ~3 minutes.
-The linoleum floor in the back portion of the house (near the pink bedroom) elevates when the central air turns on.
-We block the vent fans in the bathrooms during the summer months to prevent insects from entering.
-Given that this is the coziest home for many miles, please do not be surprised if you see a mouse. We do our best to control pests, but sometimes mother nature outsmarts us. Please put away food to avoid attracting these furry friends.
