Bedgebury National Pinetum is the most complete collection of coniferous trees anywhere in the world. The stated aim is to have seven specimens of each conifer from sources collected in the wild, of a variety of ages, providing a continuing genetic resource. As a result, a gentle stroll around the pinetum will have you craning your neck upwards as you walk past redwoods from California next to conifers from Taiwan or Tasmania – many of which are sadly nearing extinction in the wild.
The 2,000-plus acres of the wider Bedgebury Forest now offer miles of family cycling, mountain-biking, riding, walking and adventure play for all ages and abilities.
The new visitor centre next to the lake has a cycle hire shop, refreshments, showers and an education/community room. With its fabulous mixture of habitats, Bedgebury National Pinetum is home to many birds. Goldcrests can be seen amongst the conifers, while hawfinches also roost in the pinetum. Woodpeckers, siskins, marsh tits and nuthatches can also often be seen. As a location for healthy outdoor activity in a beautiful setting, Bedgebury is truly in a class of its own.
