“Developed at the turn of the century as a streetcar suburb of Washington, Columbia Heights began as a fashionable community with a commanding view of the city. The neighborhood has seen several demographic and economic shifts since then, but more recently it’s undergone a dramatic renaissance of development and revitalization, making it one of the city’s most diverse, energetic, and livable neighborhoods.”

“This area has been developed into The Wharf: it's got tons of upscale restaurants and shops, it's located on the riverfront, and often hosts free outdoor concerts and other events. The restaurants are a bit pricey, so we like to stroll around for the views of the river and then go elsewhere to eat.”

“Capitol Hill is the seat of the U.S. government, home to the domed United States Capitol, Senate, Houses of Representatives and the neoclassical Supreme Court. It’s also known for the redbrick Eastern Market, where vendors sell produce, meat and cheese throughout the week, and handicrafts and antiques on weekends. Barracks Row is lined with an eclectic mix of bakeries, pizzerias and global eateries. Capitol Hill is now a great family oriented walking neighborhood with the Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, Folger Shakespeare Library, and Eastern Market right in your back yard. Fun walking neighborhood to visit for a day. There are great restaurants in the colorful neighborhood while visiting the government buildings.”

“A “village in the city,” this is one of DC’s most diverse neighborhoods and is a great place to walk and dine - particularly for those who have been to DC and have already seen most of the more-frequented tourist spots. Just up 16th from Meridian Hill Park, make a diagonal left on Mt. Pleasant St., the main drag. Our favorites on the street: Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream for dessert (blueberry sour cream crumble and lemon curd coriander streusel are our favorites!), Mola for tapas (happy hour 5:30-7:30 Tuesday to Saturday and all day Sunday), Elle for coffee and pastries by day and dinner at night, Raven Grill for beers (this is a total dive), Suns Cinema for an indie theater experience, and Sabydee for hole-in-the-wall Laotian food (the Nam Kao/crispy rice salad is the way to go). At the top of the street, turn left on Park St. to see historic homes (this will also lead to Rock Creek Park if you are looking to hike).”

“Foggy bottom is the closest metro stop. It's an enjoyable (just under a mile) walk in nice weather. From Georgetown, it is usually easier to get around on buses than the metro.”
