Immerse yourself in history as our guest at the National Register listed Stone House Mansion (1757). Home to Revolutionary War, French and Indian War, and War of 1812 officers, statesmen, and Congressmen. Close to Historic Shepherdstown, Harpers Ferry, & Antietam National Battlefield. The apartment has everything you will need for a comfortable stay. The basement level apartment is ideal for couples, families, solo adventurers, and business travelers (available for extended stay).
The apartment in the basement level has two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with a single bed with an electric fireplace, living room with big colonial fireplace (non-functioning) and a TV and a dining table, bathroom with claw-foot tub/shower, and a kitchen with all amenities and washer and dryer and dishwasher. Historically, the living room in the basement level was a kitchen where the large fireplace was used for cooking. The queen bedroom is air-conditioned in the summer. The rest of the basement apartment is not air-conditioned but stays fairly cool in the summer. Next to Bedroom 2 is a dressing room/storage room that also has a sitting area and a double sofa bed for occasional company. This house is steeped in American history. The following is condensed from the National Register of Historic Places listing: The Stone House Mansion was constructed in 1757. It is one of the oldest stone structures in Berkeley County. The Stone House Mansion is significant for its association with the Hite vs. Fairfax lawsuit, which revolved around the question of whether colonial government or English government had the authority to grant land. The suit is significant in the interpretation of the arguments and as a precursor of the concepts and concerns that eventually led to the Revolution. It was for these very beliefs that the colonies rebelled. The stone house is mentioned in the suit and is included in a survey conducted as part of the evidence. Stone House Mansion is significant for its association with Captain John Strode, who constructed Stone House Mansion. Captain John Strode fought with the Continental Army and was the founder of Strode’s Station in Kentucky. Stone House Mansion is significant for its association with General Adam Stephen, who founded the city of Martinsburg. Stephen was second-in-command to George Washington in the French and Indian War and fought under George Washington in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War with the rank of Major General. After the war, he served as a delegate to the 1788 Virginia Convention and spoke persuasively in favor of adopting the U.S. Constitution. Stephen purchased Stone House Mansion from Captain John Strode in September 1789. The land was to be inherited by his daughter, Ann Stephen. Ann Stephen was married twice. Her first marriage in 1779 was to Captain Alexander Spotswood Dandridge, who was second cousin to Martha Washington and grandson of Virginia Governor Alexander Spotswood. Captain Dandridge served as an Aide-de-Camp on the staff of General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Captain Alexander Spotswood Dandridge died in 1785. He and Ann had one son, Adam Stephen Dandridge. Ann’s second marriage in 1787 was to Major Moses Hunter, Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Virginia House of Delegates. Stone House Mansion was inherited by Major Moses Hunter’s son, Lieutenant David Hunter, who was killed at the battle of Williamsburg on the St. Lawrence River in the War of 1812. Stone House Mansion was then inherited by the granddaughter of General Adam Stephen, Anne Hunter. Anne Hunter married Captain Henry St. George Tucker, who fought in the War of 1812 and was a U.S. Congressman, a member of the Virginia Senate, lawyer, judge, and law professor at the University of Virginia. Tucker County, West Virginia was named for Henry St. George Tucker. Stone House Mansion is significant for its association with James Monroe VanMetre and his son Isaac David Sylvester VanMetre, both prominent businessmen and farmers from a very prominent early settlement family in the Shenandoah Valley.
This quiet area is part of what was once a large historic farm, but now only 10 acres of it remain. Stone House Mansion is within a 30-minute drive to historic destinations in Harpers Ferry, WV, Winchester, VA, and Sharpsburg, MD. Visit the nearby Charles Town Racetrack and Casino. Also within a 30-minute drive visitors can enjoy outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, whitewater rafting, and biking or hiking the C&O Canal and Appalachian Trail. It is convenient to the highway. The bike path between Charles Town and Martinsburg West Virginia borders the property. The State has placed a historical marker about Stone House Mansion on the bike path! The Coast Guard facility, IRS Computing Center, and V.A. Medical Center are within a mile from here. A convenience store and gas station is a half-mile from the house.

Thanks for checking out the bus. It has been a joy to meet so many nice people since we listed it on Airbnb. The bus is just a short walk from our house where you can use the bathroom and kitchen if you need. Thanks again!
It's a 1997 school bus, not too long, not too short. There is a sofa, table, woodstove and full bed. There is ambient light and electricity on the bus as well as several candles. It has a wood floor and wood wall siding. It's in a private area of my yard and in the warmer weather there is a deck attached to the bus for relaxing. Aside from the bus, my bathroom is shared and my kitchen can be used also if requested. It depends on what the guest seems to prefer. I have had dinner with guests and taken them on tours of the area, picked them up from the train, given rides, etc. Many guest prefer to just have some privacy in the country and I respect that totally. I also work a lot which can hinder my availabilityon certain days. I live on a country road and my neighbors are like family.

    Paige2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Will's plek was geweldig! Will en Sabrina waren zo aardig.

    Taylor2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • Will en Sabrina waren absoluut prachtig.

This bright sunny bedroom is in the 1905 addition to the house, on the second floor. It has a double bed. It was known as the "Sleeping Porch", a special room for many generations of the VanMetre family to enjoy the summer breezes coming in from the many windows along two sides of the room.

Leeland , at 5011 Kearneysville Pike, adjoins Shepherdstown, the oldest town in West Virginia, full of the arts, restaurants, parks and civil war sites. You’ll love the small rental house's outdoor space, gardens, cozy historic charm and recent remodeling with HVAC, full kitchen and bath. You are in the country, yet only a stone's throw to downtown Shepherdstown. A romantic retreat for couples, it also could accommodate a young child or two.
The Lee family's 800 sq. ft law office was converted to a dwelling in 1864, and completely remodeled in 2015 for airbnb. It retains its historic charm, with narrow stairs, sloping ceilings upstairs, and low headroom in a couple of places. Downstairs is a fully equipped kitchen and living room with dining table, day bed, armchairs, TV. Upstairs is the full bath and bedroom with queen bed, armchairs, and work table. It sits 900 feet back from the road, amidst 12.5 acres of farmland and gardens. The rental is an entire little house with excellent privacy and separation from the adjacent main house, begun in 1866.
Leeland is an estate set in farmland, right on the edge of historic Shepherdstown. You have the best of both worlds: a quiet, charming dwelling surrounded by gardens, within walking distance of Shepherdstown's restaurants, shops, music and theater. The Potomac river and C&O canal are barely a mile away, and a little further afield are Sharpsburg/Antietam national park (4 miles); Harper's Ferry national park (10 miles), and other historic sites and lovely countryside.

Sitting atop a hill on 23 acres at historic Fairview Farm, Circa 1737, the newly built cottage is surrounded by pasture, organic gardens, history & overlooks the Harpers Ferry Gap. We are just a few miles from Charles Town, Harpers Ferry, Shepardstown & the Hollywood Casino, the Appalachia trail, the Shenandoah & Potomac Rivers, and many historical sites. Start your day watching the sun rise from the deck and sunsets from the porch. We are taking extra precautions sanitizing between guests...
March 26 update: we are using isopropyl alcohol and Lysol to clean between guests. We are wiping all knobs, handles, switches, remotes, and hard surfaces with isopropyl alcohol and spraying all soft surfaces like upholstery, curtains and pillows with Lysol. I am removing the throw pillows. I have extended my winter reduced rate through April. If you are a traveling nurse or doctor or someone working on the front lines please message me for a special rate. I have begun to block 3 nights between each guest to help protect me when cleaning between guests. Please check out all of our photos to see the cottage and surrounding property during all four seasons. It is getting warmer but the nights are still chilly and a perfect time to cuddle up or play board games (provided) in front of the electric fireplace. Come for a visit and let your stress melt away at our little slice of Almost Heaven West Virginia. Historic Harpers Ferry and Shepardstown, chartered in 1762 and one of the two oldest towns in WV, are just 8 miles from the cottage and perfect for a daytime or evening stroll. The Hollywood Casino, just 3 miles from the cottage has a couple very good restaurants, as well as music and a dance floor on weekends, and of course gaming. The advantages of Fairview Farm go beyond the middle-of-everything location, the gardens and sweeping vistas. The perfect family, me-time get away or romantic destination. Parties of four or less, with a positive review and a completed profile can book automatically. A guest without previous reviews or a completed profile will need to send a request to book. The cottage can sleep up to six people, but parties over four will need to send a request to book. Please look thru photos. The property is beautiful dusted or covered in snow and bursts with color in Spring, Summer and Fall. It is a great destination for photographers or anyone who loves the serenity of a rural setting. Our historic barns, mountain views, gently rolling pastures, and the wildlife, including deer, barn swallows, eagles, blue jays, red cardinals, yellow finches and hummingbirds, ground hogs, red fox, bunnies, and the elusive coyotes that can be heard more than seen all make up Fairview Farm. You will also find: > a fire pit surrounded by large rocks and chairs for evening marshmallow toasting is just a short walk from the cottage. A stack of wood is provided. > the main house and cottage sit back from the street more than 1/4 mile so there is a feeling of seclusion without the isolation. > during the 4th of July celebration, there is a fantastic view of the fireworks from the side deck of the cottage or the front porch of the main house, where you are welcome to join us. And there is much more. In early spring the farm is planted with non GMO/organic seeds and then tended organically. Last year was very hard with high temps and torrential downpours, but most of the destruction to our gardens came from bunnies that have moved on to the property and are multiplying like...bunnies. If you sit quietly outside the cottage you are sure to see them running in and out of the raspberry patch. We have our fingers crossed that the weather is less severe this year. We will have organic herbs in my kitchen, and flower gardens. Just ask if you need something for cooking- mint, basil, oregano, rosemary, thai basil. The kitchen is a cook's delight. There is a Keurig, toaster, blender, family size pressure cooker/crock pot and microwave. We've provided a nice set of cookware, and several pieces of Corning Ware that I have collected for years. If guests need a small appliance, such as a rice cooker, ice cream maker, griddle, etc. Please let us know. We have several small appliances that can be brought up to the cottage in just minutes. A large gas grill is also provided on the screened in porch. Please let us know in advance if you intend to use it so we can fill the propane tank. There is no dishwasher in the cottage. We provide a drying mat and several wood drying racks. In keeping with our organic lifestyle, we use as few chemical cleaners as possible in the cottage. We mainly use and provide vinegar or other cleaners without harsh chemicals. Please bring laundry soap if you plan on doing laundry during your stay. While we do not allow large, unruly parties, we can accommodate families or groups that would like to gather for a home cooked holiday meal at the cottage. We are happy to provide additional pots, pans, serving dishes, a full set of china and tables and seating, as needed. Just let us know. The cottage is furnished with an eclectic mix of high end contemporary furniture and vintage and antique pieces. My mother's and my taste combined into a space that all of our guests have raved about. The cottage was built for my mother in her later years. The Heywood Wakefield mid century bedroom suite in the master bedroom was her wedding gift from my grandparents in the late 1950s. Though she never moved in, all doorways, hallways, and the shower were designed to be wheelchair accessible. There is a 1/4 step to enter the porch, the cottage and the shower. The cottage will be tastefully decorated for holidays including a decorated tree for Christmas. If you, your family or friends are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or holiday we are happy to provide a home baked decorated cake or cookies for an additional fee. You can choose from many flavors, and types including glutton free, dairy free, vegan, or organic, even Keto. MOST IMPORTANTLY: We welcome everyone! We absolutely do not and will not discriminate based on race, religion, gender, or who you love. We will respect your privacy and only ask you respect our property. This a functioning small farm, surrounded by farms with all the smells, and noises of livestock and tractors. While the evenings are quiet, and the star filled skies, breathtaking, during planting, growing and harvest season work starts at sun up. Please be aware The main 1/4 mile driveway is gravel and the driveway to the cottage is mostly a dirt road with a layer of gravel. Both can get beat up during bad storms and/or heavy farm equipment. We keep them entirely passable but please drive slowly to avoid potholes on the main driveway. Guests are responsible for reading the House Manual on the App. It’s not heavy reading - just a short list of common sense rules for staying at the cottage. Check -In Instructions on the app include step by step photos to help find and enter the cottage. Other Info: we were chosen to be the recipient of the largest tree plantings along Elks Run by the Conservation Department of WV Forestry. With the help of volunteers, 150 Native trees have been planted along the creek to help prevent erosion. UPDATE: The remaining 150 trees have been planted. "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, & narrow-mindedness... Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men & things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” - Mark Twain
We are located on the main road that runs between Charles Town and Sheperdstown. There are grocery stores (Aldis, Weiss, and a Giant called Martins) CVS, Rite Aid, Sweetfrog, Home Depot, Kohls, a great nail salon, and several restaurants and fast food joints within 3 miles. All the conveniences of the suburbs, in a rural setting. The cottage is surrounded by farmland pastures. A working dairy farm is across the street and can be seen from the cottage. The pastures of a beautiful 60 acre farm that once bred black angus, backs to our property

  • Diane's place is geweldig!

Toen we aankwamen waren we doorweekt, omdat we Antietam vóór aankomst hadden getourd.

We zullen zeker snel terugkomen !!

  • Geweldig verblijf.

Immerse yourself in history as our guest at the National Register listed Stone House Mansion (1757). Home to Revolutionary War and War of 1812 officers, statesman, and Congressmen. Close to Historic Shepherdstown, Harpers Ferry, & Antietam National Battlefield. It has everything you will need for a comfortable stay. Our house is ideal for couples, families, solo adventurers, business travelers (available for extended stay). 1 to 6 bedrooms available- priced per bedroom. Group deals available.
This paneled bedroom with a full bed on the first floor once functioned as the farm office for the VanMetre's dairy and renowned Country Ham business. The knotty pine paneling is said to come from shipping crates that transported milk and dairy products produced on the farm back and forth to the soldiers fighting in Europe in World War I. This room is named for the Hunter family. Major Moses Hunter married General Adam Stephen's daughter Ann. The recent generations of VanMetres were widely-known for their country ham business.
This is part of what was once a large historic farm, but now only 10 acres of it remain. You will probably see some chickens and cows. Stone House Mansion is within a 30-minute drive to historic destinations in Harpers Ferry, WV, Winchester, VA, and Sharpsburg, MD. Visit the nearby Charles Town Racetrack and Casino. Also within a 30-minute drive visitors can enjoy outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, whitewater rafting, and biking or hiking the C&O Canal or Appalachian Trail. It is convenient to the highway and less than a mile to a supermarket. The new Route 9 bike trail between Charles Town and Martinsburg, WV borders the property. The State has placed a historical marker about Stone House Mansion on the bike path!

Cheery floral bedroom with a queen bed on the second floor. This room is named after the Tucker family- Captain Henry St. George Tucker, Congressman, lawyer, professor of law and his wife Anne Hunter Tucker, the granddaughter of Revolutionary War General Adam Stephen. This house is steeped in American history. The following is summarized from the National Register of Historic Places listing: The Stone House Mansion was built in 1757. Stone House Mansion is significant for its association with James Monroe Van Metre and his son Isaac David Sylvester Van Metre, both prominent businessmen and farmers from a very prominent early settlement family in the Shenandoah Valley.
This quiet area is part of what was once a large historic farm, but now only 10 acres of it remain. You will probably see some chickens and cows. Stone House Mansion is within a 30-minute drive to historic destinations in Harpers Ferry, WV, Winchester, VA, and Sharpsburg, MD. Visit the nearby Charles Town Racetrack and Casino. Also within a 30-minute drive visitors can enjoy outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, whitewater rafting, and biking or hiking the C&O Canal and Appalachian Trail.
