Portreath, Verenigd Koninkrijk

Portreath, situated on the North Cornwall coast, about 5 miles north of Redruth, was originally a small fishing village and an important part of the Cornish mining industry. Today it's a beautiful retreat with a narrow harbour, secluded sandy beaches and a stream running to the sea on one side. It is ideal for swimming and surfing, watched by the local Surf and Life Saving Club. Portreath offers the pleasures of the sea and countryside with beautiful views, spectacular cliffs and walking trails. Illogan Woods is adjacent to Portreath with lovely streams and a circular walk leading to the 14th-century church tower of Illogan. There is also Tehidy Country Park just outside of Portreath with its adjoining golf-course. It is a beautiful country park comprised of 250 acres of woodland, lakes, bridleways, cycling and nature trails. There is a picturesque lake with swans and various kinds of waterfowl. Occupying a dramatic valley location with one of the most spectacular and beautiful beaches of the Atlantic Coast, Portreath has been drawing visitors for years to take advantage of its natural sun trap. A superb location for a holiday to Cornwall with a fine beach and close to good main roads means that you can easily explore the surrounding area on days that are not conducive to sitting on the beach.

Porthtowan has one of Cornwall's finest surfing waves. Producing good waves at all states of the tide. It is not for the faint-hearted and beginners should be careful. An excellent surf school operates from the beach. At low tide, the beach stretches down to St Agnes Head and Chapel Porth Beach where you will find a lovely National Trust Cafe full of warming hot chocolate and fabulous views.

Gwithian and Hayle, dominated by the spectacular 3 miles of golden sands that stretch south from Gwithian Towans and Godrevy Lighthouse. A quite stunning beach that offers opportunities for sunbathing and surfing. When the wind is blowing, watch out for the windsurfers, particularly in the waves at the northern end of the beach. This is one of the best windsurfing spots in the country. In the town of Hayle, Paradise Park is always popular with both adults and kids with their fantastic collection of rare birds and animals. There is also a good indoor play area for the kids if the weather gets bad!

St Ives, once a busy fishing village, now relies on tourism as its main industry. Turner came and painted a landscape in 1811 and art has played a part in St Ives history ever since. More recently Barbara Hepworth and Bernard Leach. The Penwith Gallery and the Tate St Ives have put St Ives on the modern map. The Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden is an amazing place to visit, and well worth it even if you're not a budding artist. Trewyn Studios where she lived and worked from 1939 until her tragic death in 1975 has been turned into a fantastic museum, depicting many of her favourite sculptures in the subtropical garden, is now managed by the Tate. The Tate Gallery St Ives was built in 1993 on the former gasworks site displaying various paintings, sculptures and ceramics.

From Penzance, you can take the Scillonian for a day trip to the picturesque Isles of Scilly, well worth a visit if you have never been. 10 minutes down the road lies Marazion famous for St Michaels Mount, home to a medieval castle and a working local community. St Michaels Mount is accessible by a causeway at low tides, or by boat. The castle is leased from the National Trust by the St Aubyn family who resides at the property maintaining and working the grounds.
