De ruimte
Where the secluded rainforest jungle meets the ocean, you will find a special getaway at Mana House. Mana House is an upstairs, self-contained dwelling with a private entrance and a large open floor plan covering 1600 square feet. The space includes three bedrooms, 1 1/2 bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a mango wood bar, and stools for in-kitchen dining.

Bedrooms include 2 king beds and 1 queen bed. A single bed, of the same great quality, can be added by request. A variety of additional futons and unique sleeping arrangements can also be requested. Enjoy a serene night's rest on our locally-made natural beds, with premium, all-cotton sheets. Behind blackout curtains, the sound of birds and the ocean will steal into your dreams like a nature soundscape.

A full wrap-around and screened-in lanai provide outdoor-in comfort with a large dining table, a couch, chairs, and hammocks for lounging about and taking in the scenery.

Find a connection to nature in this fully functional off-grid getaway, as the sun powers the house and the rain fills the home’s water catchment system. (Backup generator provides extra power as needed.)

Feel rejuvenated in the vivid landscape of your upstairs hideaway surrounded by rainforest trees.

Your hosts live downstairs. We are available to assist you however we can. Relax and enjoy the space as if we weren't here; unless of course you have a question or would like a tour of the property. Our mission is for your vacation to be magical.

Toegang voor gasten
Direct coastal access from your spacious three-bedroom home with a private entrance on the second floor of this two-story home. Your space includes a full kitchen with cooking essentials, 2 bathrooms, hammocks, a large dining table, an eat-in kitchen, a gas range, a refrigerator, a full screened-in lanai, beautiful views, and the sound of the ocean. The first floor is the home of your hosts.

Feel the heat coming from our steam vent in the front yard and walk the bridge over a lava tube in the backyard to experience the big island rainforest preserved essentially as it was since the arrival of the goddess Pele. Explore the surrounding 4 acres of raw jungle property, full of massive old-growth trees, wild fruit, and Hawaiian medicinal plants.

Find treasures growing wild in nature everywhere. Discover bananas (green and yellow can be cooked), coconuts, sprouted coconut, grapefruit, lemon, mango, basil, kale, lilikoi, hot peppers, avocado, kombucha squash, Noni, and breadfruit (each available seasonally).

Take an afternoon walk across the street and watch sea turtles surfing in the waves or the occasional fisherman casting his rod into the deep sea. A rare lookout point for dolphins and whales passing by can be seen up close from the cliffside across the street. Only 60 feet out is a deep channel of water used as a pathway by the largest ocean animals, called Ono lane.

Continue your walk along the coastal trails, perhaps crossing over the lava bridge and through the Hala and Coconut trees to picnic on the smooth Pahoihoi lava rocks while watching waves crash dramatically, sometimes spraying 20 feet high above the lava rock.

Cruise down the Red Road in the cool of the afternoon through tunnels of tree canopies, enjoying the coastal breeze and mist from the waves. Feel as though you have traveled back in time in this serene environment.

During summer, wild mangos grow all along the road and are available to pick. Or find a variety of other fruit available from roadside fruit trees and stands.

Andere dingen waar je op moet letten
Enjoy. Don't play with centipedes, they can sting. Keep summer bugs out by shutting the screen door. This is jungle living at its best! Wash all fruits and vegetables carefully before eating them as slugs can carry disease. Turn off lights when not in use and please don't operate high energy consumers like toasters, laundry and hairdryers when the sun is not out. Use water but don't waste it, our water is collected rain and for your comfort the whole house water supply is cleaned by a 4 stage filtration system down to 1 micron, including UV.

This is a magical space and property. Live simply and soak in the abundance of the island.

Currently, we are making plans to turn our backyard jungle into a luxurious hang-out spot with triangle hammocks that fit 6-12 people hung in the trees and beautiful screened platforms below the large trees. It will be a place to experience nature with all the comforts of inside. It will be a place to meditate, do yoga, spend time with friends in a unique setting, or dance to live music. We plan for it to also include a simple covered kitchen set-up, an outdoor rock shower, and a composting toilet. We are studying to learn the best building practices and the right materials to use that will hold up to the harshness of the rainforest jungle while also maintaining the least negative environmental impact possible. We would like to eventually add a zip line, aerial silks, ponds, and a tree house to our backyard oasis. We are beautifying the property using the information we learned in our permaculture classes. We enjoy learning about, planting, and using Hawaiian plants, herbal remedies, and holistic/alternative medicine. We love and appreciate all kinds of music. We play guitar, piano, sing, and like collecting unique instruments. We are a musical family. We love to dance to electronic music and participate in Puna’s vibrant dance community. We love our community and Hawaiian culture. We were privileged to take part in building a traditional Hawaiian House or “Hale” at a local charter school in Hilo. We participated in Hawaiian language classes in Leilani estates by a revered Hawaiian language expert and have practiced local Hula, lei making, and basket weaving techniques. We are also social and value our connection to our local community. We became inspired to attend local meetings to learn about current Hawaiian politics and to hear a variety of viewpoints from the Hawaiian perspective. We respect and support the rights of the Hawaiian people. A little about our community and neighborhood and why we find this place incredibly unique and special. There are so many amazingly talented and interesting people here. A general practice of aloha, gratitude for life, and acceptance of individuality is found here to a radical degree that I have never experienced before. It truly is beautiful, heartwarming, and life-changing. The physical environment here is grand and awe-inspiring. It is breathtaking. We are filled with gratitude to be able to live here. We are in continuous disbelief that this is our life. The neighborhood of people living in this rainforest jungle is very special. It is a different way of life. There is so much abundance of time and resources here. Working is less of a way of life here and generosity is easy. We tend not to define ourselves by our career or job but rather by our passions and values. You can live comfortably here, for the most part, under a tarp or in a tent. Fruit and other food grows and is available to pick all along the road. Many here live without using cash, but prefer to trade skills and resources with one another. There is a special practice of radical gifting amongst our community members that inspires me to see life in a whole new light. People are extremely generous, often expecting nothing in return. I have experienced this and been transformed by it again and again. Our connection to nature here is incredibly strong. Most of us live off-grid and depend on nature to provide for our daily needs. We experience changes in nature more acutely and intensely here compared to most cities that are built to protect you from noticing environmental changes. The experience takes you out of yourself and connects you to life all around you. It is said that the veil between this world and the next is thinner here than other places, which draws a lot of healers and spiritual practitioners of every kind, and even a unique interest in aliens and all kinds of colorful belief systems. We know locals that do private tours, teach Qigong, fire dance, D.J., and teach yoga of many kinds (including acro yoga and booty yoga), we even know professional circus performers. There is a vibrant circus community here as well. We encourage everyone who visits here to come with an intention to live with aloha, show respect for the land and Hawaiian people here, and be open to appreciating our special way of life in our jungle/beach oasis.
