How is living in a tiny house on wheels? How much can we undersize our everyday life? Come to test it yourself inside "aVOID", the first tiny house ever built in Italy. You will be surrounded by the beautiful hills of Toscana.

The 9 sqm living space is equipped with all the comforts. A built-in furniture transforms the initially empty grey room in a traditional wooden house. The murphy bed comes out from the wall. The kitchen is hidden behind doors and the bathroom is located inside the closet.

De ruimte
Named “aVOID”, it is the first mobile “tiny house” built in Italy, and the first in the world designed in the shape of a terraced house. Assembled on a trailer, the 9 sqm living space is fully equipped with every comfort integrated in a seemingy empty void — its namesake — where all the furniture is folded into the walls just like a Swiss Army knife.

"aVOID "represents a real lifestyle characterized by a strong adhesion to minimalist principles, in the spirit of the “less is more” movement and a more sustainable way of living. The prototype was designed by architect Leonardo Di Chiara with the aim of creating a new housing model for the growing generation of urban nomads like himself. The interior of the small unit is inspired by the balance of emptiness, from which the name aVOID its derived.

The house, composed by a single room lacking of any piece of furniture, is made functional by the activation of wall-mounted mobile devices, which enable different uses of the living space.

The “void” functions as space for meditation where the clear image and the pureness of the room are disturbed only by the spacing between the wooden panels. The homogeneity and the indeterminateness of the grey color are suddenly interrupted by the opening of reclinable devices, such as a murphy bed (for one or two persons), tables, chairs, a fully functioning kitchen, a 0.8 sqm toilet and so on which reveal the domestic warmth of the wooden texture.

The toilet is equipped with a mirror cabinet, a reclinable sink, a composting toilet (dry toilet) and a shower. You can also use a provided outdoor camping shower which you can place just outside the tiny house. You will find a hairdryer inside the cabinet.

The electricity comes from the solar panels and the water is collected with tanks on wheels. Since the tiny house is off-grid you need to take care of not wasting your resources. If you will need, traditional electricity plugs and sinks are available at the main building of the hosting farm placed 100m far from the "aVOID".

Inside a narrow cabinet is hidden a ladder which is used to climb up to the rooftop. Enjoy some time there, especially during the sunset, to relax with an amazing view to the old city of Siena.

My name is Leonardo Di Chiara and I am a 27 years-old architect with a great passion for tiny houses. Since I was a kid, I have been fascinated by the relationship between human being and living spaces. The story of my life starts actually with a strong limitation in space. Since I was 8 I have been living in a very small room of seven square meters in my parents’ apartment in Pesaro, Italy. Everyday I was forced to learn how to organize my tiny space, fit all of my belongings inside the few cabinets, and to adapt the same room to host my friends, to play, or later to study. I grew up with a minimalistic lifestyle, which now certainly influences my design. Indeed, without realizing it, I was already starting to become an architect. I decided to move to Bologna to study Architecture and Building Engineering where I could combine real experience with theory. During my studies I wanted to put my knowledge into practice and build my first house for myself. Forced by the meager savings I had, I started from almost the same dimensions as my room: 9 sqm. I like this number: it is the minimum dimension by law for a single room in Italy. I wanted to demonstrate to myself and others that, with a good design, it is possible to live respectably in such a tiny space. From past experience in my room I learned the importance of emptiness, functionally and physiologically speaking and also the importance of reductionism as a lifestyle. Like many fresh graduate students, especially in architecture, I could not imagine settling my life in one place forever. Buying an apartment and renovating was surely not a possibility for me. During one of my travels to Berlin I met the Tinyhouse University. I got to know the great potential of the American tiny house typology: small living structures on wheels that could fulfill my desire to be a “new generation nomad”. So I didn’t waste any more time, and I put all my efforts and savings to build my very first house: the so-called aVOID Tiny House. Since August 2017 aVOID is my home: different locations but always the same place. I like to live in cities: Berlin, Munich, Milano, Rome, Paris, Copenhagen, Zurich, etc. But right now I feel that I need a break and this is why I moved with my aVOID on a beautiful hill just outside Siena. This is the most perfect location for you to also test my aVOID Tiny House and to try the experience of how it is living in such a tiny space. I would be very interested to know from my guests what is their reaction and feeling after spending one or two nights inside my mobile home. I established a real “test-living” programme where I would like you to participate. If you are interested you will find more info on my airbnb profile. Besides my tiny house adventure I always love to visit and experience different living spaces during my travels. Architecture and housing is my way to know more and get a deeper understanding about culture and traditions of other countries. This is why you find me on airbnb! If you believe I should book one night in your house, send me a message! I will not miss it for sure. Leonardo PS: My motto is "Tiny is beautiful, tiny is possible"! Build your own tiny house, if you really want this you can make it!

Tijdens je verblijf
In the renting price is also included a guided tour of the Tiny House by Matthias Berger, the youngest member of the Tinyhouse University collective. He can speak fluently English, German, Spanish and Italian. You can ask him all the questions you have concerning tiny houses: design, building, living. He lives just 5 km away from the "aVOID" and he will help you for any problem. He can also give advice about the area (touristic attractions, restaurants, farms, etc.).

[ Test- Living, optional ] - Living in a tiny house is a new experience for everyone, especially if this is the "aVOID". We would like to collect your feedback with a questionnaire. In this case you would become part of the "Test-Living" programme, a research conducted by the Tinyhouse University. If you will accept to participate, you will be asked to report about your experience with all the domestic activities in a tiny space: sleeping, cooking, going to the toilet and so on. Pictures of you in the Tiny House would also be very useful.
