De ruimte
Overview
Enjoy this 1/4 acre with lots of lush foliage with banana, mango, lemon, tangerine, calamansi, passion fruit and lichee trees. This is a large, specious room (12X16) with a private 1/2 bath (toilet and sink, but no shower). You'll have full access to the house (which is shared with the host or with other guests), including the large downstairs lanai and the living room and kitchen and the downstairs bathroom has a shower and a Jacuzzi tub. We have refreshing trade winds, so if you keep the doors and windows open, there is no need for A/C, but there are plenty of fans.

There's a triangle of space above the bedroom wall, between the bedroom and the living room, which is great for ventilation, but when there's a light on in the living room, the light is reflected up into the bedroom. I try to keep the light off in the living room after 9 pm, but if you want extreme noise privacy, this is not the best arrangement.

If you want to share the room with 1 or 2 other people, there are 2 twin air mattresses that you would have to blow up yourself (there is an electric pump), and then deflate when you leave. Of course, I provide bedding and towels for everyone.
Free parking (on the street, right in front of the house. free papayas or mangoes or tangerines when in season, bananas, coffee, tea, Wi-Fi, Jacuzzi.

It’s usually quiet and peaceful in Papaaloa, with lots of local color with the occasional roosters and sheep. In the evenings, the children enjoy playing in the street, and at night the coqui frogs sing their concert. On occasion, the neighbors’ hunting dogs get excited, especially when the wild boar wander down from the hills.
There is free parking in front of the house and it's a very safe neighborhood. You will want to have a car, though there is access to a $1 bus if you don’t mind the steep 2-block walk up the hill from Highway 19.
This is an excellent central location, just 30 minutes north of Hilo along the coast, past the lush valleys and waterfalls. There are lots of fun restaurants and places to shop in Hilo.
The house is just 15 minutes from dramatic Laupahoehoe Point where you can watch the ocean waves crashing against the lava rocks
Going south, the house is about 10 miles from KoleKole Beach State Park, Akaka Falls and the world famous Arboretum.
Or you can drive north a half hour to historic Honokaa with its restored old-fashioned movie theatre, and a little further north to the lush Waipeo Valley. Or turn west from Honokaa and another quarter hour will take you to the town of Waimea with a brewery and more restaurants and galleries. Or go up Saddle Road to the world-class observatory on Mauna Kea (bring warm clothes for that trip - it snows up there!).
A half hour past Waimea will bring you to some of the world’s finest white sands beaches at Mauna Kea and Hapuna, where there is excellent snorkeling and the sun almost always shines.
One of the marvels of the Big Island is that it contains 10 of the world's 14 different climate zones. When you dream of a lush tropical Hawaii, with soft trade winds and waterfalls and sensual aromas, and coconut trees swaying in the wind, you are dreaming of the climate of the Hamakua Coast. It is almost always between 68 and 78 degrees here.
If you want to be able to wake up in the morning and walk to the beach, you'll need to go to the other side. But then you'll be in the hot, dry, humid climate, and more likely to encounter the vog (smog from the volcano). If you enjoy the lush green, with refreshing breezes and amazing sunrises, this is the place for you. Or, if you have time, plan to spend half your time on this side of the island (the Hamakua Coast on the Hilo Side) and half your time on the Kona side.

Getting Around
You will want to have a car, though there is access to a $1 bus if you don’t mind the steep 2-block walk up the hill from Highway 19.

People from all backgrounds are welcome here.

Just 24 miles north of Hilo and about 10 miles from KoleKole Beach State Park, Laupahoehoe Point, Akaka Falls and the world famous Arboretum. A half-hour from the town of Honoka'a and 45 minutes to Waimea. Also in nearby Laupahoehoe, there is a free Olympic-size swimming pool, tennis courts, library, gas station and convenience store. Two blocks away is the Papaaloa Store, with a small grocery store with a good selection of food including health foods and local organic produce, and also the Papaaloa Cafe, with good food including a bar, where they serve excellent pizza and hamburgers and there are great local musicians almost every night.

Insects & Garbage
In Hawaii, ants are prevalent and so are cockroaches. They like the warm climate just as much as we do. If you are squeamish about bugs, this isn’t a good place for you. I keep them mostly under control, but I don't like to use strong poisons, so sometimes you will see them here. Please wash your dishes soon after you use them, and keep all food covered and put away (there are leftover containers in the basket on the kitchen floor). Spray the counters with Orange Oxy (it’s under the kitchen sink, on the right) and wipe them after every use. If you have any smelly garbage, like packaging from fish or meat, just put that in a bag in the freezer. Or put it in a closed, sealed plastic bag and put in the outside garbage. If you do see a large cockroach (a very rare occurrence), I’d suggest you step on it or grab your shoe and smash it!
Mosquitoes & Screen Doors
No problem with mosquitoes during the day, BUT sometimes they do come out at 3 pm, so be sure to close any doors and windows that don’t have screens (almost all of them have screens).

Hi - I enjoy sharing my space and getting to know new people. I bought this house in 2013 and I had so much fun remodeling it and making it beautiful and inviting. I've written 16 books on self-healing (with Random House and Bantam) and I work occasionally as a counselor at a high-end rehab center. I love gardening, especially growing my own herbs and veggies. I love nature. This house is so great because you can see the sunrise from the lanai. I've traveled all over the US, and into Mexico, Canada, Thailand, Bali, Israel, France, Switzerland, England, and this is still one of my favorite places in the whole world. I know what it's like to be a traveler, and it's always so much nicer to stay in someone's home instead of an impersonal hotel, and to be exposed to more of the local color—which we have plenty of in our little neighborhood.

Tijdens je verblijf
There's a good chance that you will be sharing the house, either with me (and sometimes my boyfriend) or with another guest or two, who would be in the downstairs bedroom. In most cases, I will still be on the island, within an hour of the house, and I may stop by or stay for a night or two in my office. I'm generally available in case of emergencies, and also my neighbor, Thomas, is a handyman and very helpful.
