Wat je gaat doen

Our experience provides the best of its category -- best bicycles, guides, vehicles! We transport our guests and bikes in Mercedes Sprinters, and our guides ride with very small groups. We'll visit waterfalls you will not see on other tours. You'll immerse yourself in the temperate rainforest!

We tell the stories that need to re-awaken. Beyond the 180 years of pioneers and loggers, before the century-old highway, this was the land of people with a rich mythology. We remember the long history this place holds, and tell these stories as best we can.

After we fit you for bikes at our shop in SE Portland, we'll head out in one of our Mercedes Sprinters. The bike ride and hike both take place in the Columbia River Gorge, the waterfall-laden western end of an 80-mile (130-km) canyon. At a breathtaking vista overlooking the Gorge, we'll take photos, and hear the story of who was here before us. We'll also tell you how the waterfalls were created before getting on your bikes to ride.

Over the course of the tour, we'll ride over six miles (10 km), mostly gentle downhill on a historic highway frequented by cyclists, see four to six waterfalls, hike 2.5 miles (4km), visit one waterfall unique to our tour -- all within a 30-40 min drive of the city. The tour is about five hours; you'll remember it for years to come!

Last minute is ok! Contact us for bookings beyond the window.

I'm Sarah Gilbert, co-founder of Around Portland Tours and together with partners & guides Edwin, Evan and Jeri will host the experiences. I'm a published writer of essays and professional storyteller, and each of the narratives around which our tours are based is a collaboration between us, writers and route designers, as a movable narrative, what we call place-based storytelling.

Between us, we have decades of experience guiding bicycling, hiking and scenic tours in the Columbia Gorge, as well as wilderness readiness training and education in the botany and geology of this place. We have taken the best parts of our 1000s of visits and applied it to what we do in this experience.

We will visit the highlights you cannot miss -- like Latourell Falls -- but we will also take you beyond.

Waar je naartoe gaat

After fitting you for a bike that fits you at our inner SE Portland bike shop, 833 SE Main #120, we'll head out to the Columbia Gorge, riding on the Historic Columbia River Highway and then taking a break from biking to hike up to a magical upper waterfall not visited by other tours. This waterfall was described by native people as the cursed wife of Coyote, the Beaver princess; we'll tell her story before we get back on our bikes to ride more.

Sarah and Edwin were great. They accommodated our shifting needs and we ended up doing a little bit of everything that was a part of the tour. We would highly recommend others to try it out!

Maddy was wonderful. Very accommodating and really thought of everything, including bringing extra gloves for our downhill bike adventures. The hike brought us to a secluded waterfall/cave that I would have never found on my own. Overall great half-day adventure!

We had a great experience with Sarah and Edwin. They were both very personable and accommodating. We were able to make some new friends, and they were so great that we signed up for their sunrise aerial tram tour the very next morning.

My daughter and I had a wonderful time biking and hiking the gorgeous waterfalls outside Portland. Our hosts, Edwin and Evven were knowleagable, caring and attentive. We got to see some amazing scenary and the exercise made it that much more memorable. It wasn’t strenuous but you had the opportunity to get your heart rate up a little. We learned about how Portland has changed in recent years and we got recommendations on food and neighborhoods we had to visit.

So this review is not about the Columbia River Gorge hike and bike tour but rather about their Mt. Hood tour. I was originally signed up for the gorge hike/bike tour; however, I requested to do the Mt. Hood tour instead, as my original plans for visiting Mt. Hood (booked elsewhere) couldn’t go through. Therefore, I asked Sarah if it was at all possible to do their Mt. Hood tour. Fortunately, they were so nice and accommodating and were able to accept my request to do the Mt. Hood tour. I had an awesome time on the Mt. Hood adventure. Our first stop was at an interesting Oregon Trail museum (I forgot the name of the museum). We then stopped to do a little hike to see a serene waterfall called Little Zigzag Falls in the Mt. Hood area. Next, we stopped at another museum at Government Camp. Finally, we went to a canyon where we did a hike in the snow and saw the majestic Mount Hood volcano. It was the first time I saw a Cascade volcano which was truly breathtaking. The food at the brewery at Mt. Hood was super delicious and one-of-a-kind! Anyways, I had an incredible time on this well-rounded adventure. Although it wasn’t the gorge hike/bike tour, I’m sure that that adventure would have been amazing too! Overall, I highly recommend booking your Oregon adventures with Sarah and her team!

Stunning views of all the waterfalls along the route. We don’t cycle much at home, but we found the rides very easy. Really enjoyed the experience.

Meer tips

The cycling is appropriate for infrequent cyclists, but is on a historic highway with some vehicles. We work to make the ride safe and pleasant for all abilities, but absolute beginners may not enjoy this experience. The hiking is relatively easy, but does include 600 ft elevation gain.

Wat je mee moet nemen

Reusable water bottle if available (we'll provide if not)

Comfortable clothes appropriate for both biking and hiking (avoid very loose clothing)
