Wat je gaat doen
A short drive to the south of present day Pondicherry, lies the village of Veerampattinam. On this fragmented piece of land overlooking the Bay of Bengal on one side and separated from the mainland by a narrow channel that’s part of a network of backwaters, is a mound called Arikamedu. Buried layer upon layer, the legacy of centuries of human settlements are chronicled in the very stones and artifacts that’s left behind. From the days of Ashoka the Great and Alexander of Macedon - even before the advent of Christ, to modern times, this innocuous strip of land – better known as Poduca to the ancient Greco-Roman mariners, played an important role in the history of Southern India and was perhaps, the real origin of modern day Pondicherry. We will go to this now-deserted piece of land and even as you explore the surroundings and the one remaining edifice – the ruins of a seminary built by the French in 1773, I will, by way of chronicling the communities that lived here and the local industry, establish the historical significance of the lost Indian city of Emporia Poduca: an archaeological treasure trove! Century by century, I will describe to you the human settlements that took place and what they did for a living: of the cosmopolitan nature of the community that once happened to live here, and how they established the ancient trade routes during the heydays of the Roman Empire.
An engineer by profession, I've worked in remote mines, tramped all over the Himalayas, worked in design studios, taught in architecture schools and dabbled in painting before turning my attention to tourism. A chance opportunity in Rajasthan, when I had to stand in for the official tour guide - narrating the history of Chittorgarh fort and the legendary Rajput clan, I realized how interesting history can be; much of it depending on how it is conveyed. Through anecdotes and folklore, it was a brilliant experience telling people about it. Steeped in history, there is a lot more to Pondicherry than meets the eye! Away from the mainstream tourist attractions are places where once well-trodden paths lie covered in weeds and every cobblestone has a unique story to tell. It is this dimension of Pondicherry that I wish to reveal to my guests.
