You will experience an intimate live concert in the vintage townhouse of musician/bandleader Rene Calvo. It may be a local blues or jazz guest artist or the blues based indie-rock, house-band Goddess Lakshmi. Surprise guests frequently sit in. You will be able to converse with the musicians in a semi-casual setting. The venue, The Harlem Flophouse has been a flophouse for over 100 years. It has a history of occupancy by musicians and music. At the time of it's purchase it had 5 pianos in various states of disrepair on the premises. It has been lovingly restored by the owner. It also functions as a guesthouse and received accolades world wide for it's unique charm. It has been the location of numerous fashion and performance photo shoots. The doors open at 7pm in this speakeasy setting. You will be able to mingle with local musicians and guests from around the world. The show will start at 7:30pm and last approximately one hour. At the end of the performance the venue will remain open while you continue to interact with the performers and fellow attendees.
René Calvo, composer, performer and presenter, is the leader of Goddess Lakshmi . They have recorded, 4 albums, toured regionally and been heard on 200+ terrestrial radio stations. They can be heard on almost all streaming services. They have been interviewed on WHCR Harlem, WEMF Boston, WTCC Hartford, WLFR Pomona NJ, WXCI Danbury Ct. and Radio X in Frankfurt Germany. They have performed at the historic Bitter End, The Mercury Lounge, Pianos, Parkside Lounge, Spike Hill, The Way Station and The Paper Box. Calvo came to New York City as a dancer working with Yoshiko Chuma and The School of Hard knocks. He also created the off off Broadway serial Ailanthus Grove. He is the owner of The Harlem Flophouse.
