If you want to spend a day seeing the most sought after sites in the Cairo/Giza area, then begin your adventure in Egypt with Yassin. Yassin not only had all the information I could handle about each of our stops, he knew the particular people to assist to make my 8 hours with him even better. We began with an 8am pickup at my apartment and I got back at about 4:30. I was lucky enough to have Yassin (and Mohammad, who drove) to myself. From the beginning he made sure to take care of me at each site, recommending places to shop and not shop. Our first stop was for breakfast, for falafel and vegetable sandwiches in fresh pita; we ate in the car, so there was no time lost: it was really yummy. :) Saqqara, the oldest pyramid in our stops was an excellent place to start, as there were not many people out yet and we were also able to go down underground into the first halls that would eventually lead a long distance to the actual pyramid. Since there is no oxygen in the long hall underground, the public does not go any further. But these two rooms were filled with hieroglyphics that is the first pictorial alphabet. There were also 5-pointed stars carved tip to tip in the ceilings, just like one would see the heavens without the light pollution that is the norm in most people’s lives. More buildings leading to tombs with even more fabulous hieroglyphics. It was a fabulous beginning to being immersed in all things pyramids and Egyptian kinds and queens. Yassin, throughout our day, knew much more information than my mind could retain...so I cannot tell you any more. Our next stop was Memphis, the first capitol of ancient Egypt. A small Sphinx and statues from Ramses II began my education in the symbolic representations in the sculptures...the hand grasping a rod, for strength; the double crown for unity of north and south; the long beard, long life; and the cobra for protection. I wanted to pinch myself to make myself believe that I was really seeing all these ancient artifacts. I met Yassin’s friend, Buck, who had a small stand and I bought a ceramic blue cat, as it is such a typical symbol of ancient Egypt. Whether protecting the house from mice and caring for kittens or just the regal way they behaved, cats were domesticated by the Egyptians 4000 years ago and still revered. For a break from sun and sights of Egyptian ruins, we stopped at a government certified shop to learn about making the ancient paper from the papyrus plant. I was shown how strips of the inner stem is cut and woven, pressed and dried to make the thick, flexible paper. I did not want to buy anything, but I could not help myself and bought drawings on the papyrus of the ‘key of life’ and the earliest calendar. Yassin even surprised me with a drawing of the ‘tree of life’ and my name spelled out in hieroglyphics. He is just so sweet and thoughtful, as well as knowledgeable. The next stop was the one I had waited a lifetime to see: the great pyramids of Giza, the Giza Necropolis. Although pictures often just show 2-3 pyramids, there were actually nine. The stones are huge: they are huge. We walked a short distance before Yassin wound a Bedouin iconic black and white checked scarf around my head, complete with a tail covering my lower face in preparation for meeting Ali, the camel man. They both helped me onto a camel in order to view the majority of the acreage the most traditional way. Although no stirrups, the ride is quite comfortable once you relax into the forward and backward swaying. Mickey Mouse was my camels name and he was not only healthy, but quite a character. There were the obligatory picture sessions on and off the camel with the pyramids in the distance that will prove how exciting it is to actually see these miracles of human construction and culture. On our way out, we stopped to see ‘the Great Sphinx of Giza’, which is massive. I knew I would like the stop at the perfumery. Run by the same family for generational, Perfumes Palace, is the place to go to get the pure oils and learn about how they are used medicinally, in addition to just smelling lovely. After quite a lengthy, private session with one of the family, I made the difficult decision on what to take home with me. I am not sure how I am going to get them all the way home, but they were packed well and sealed to expedite that process. I really loved this stop: it was so much more fabulous than I could have imagined. Another good stop: the classic Egyptian dish, koshari, a mix of macaroni, spaghetti, rice, corn, lentils and a garlic tomato sauce with spicy chili. I probably did not get all the ingredients in my list nor do I believe there is only one way to make it; but this was great and felt like comfort food to provide me with energy to complete the day. (Poor Mohamed, he had to keep driving.)0 Our final stop was at a large shop specializing in everything rich and fabulous. I imagined myself rich and able to buy the gorgeous gold and lapis Nefertiti, ancient queen of Egypt. But instead I bought a white gold “key of life” symbol and a silver cartouche with Hatshepsut in hieroglyphics and my initials in gold on the reverse, both to attach to my charm bracelet when I return home. Certainly, save your shopping for when you are with Yassin, who will take you to the quality places. As you can tell, it was a fabulous day and now I am ready to lean back, rest my head and put my feet up. I chose Yassin on referral...

A experiência é incrível!
