Wat je gaat doen
We'll travel today by private minivan. We need to leave the city early for our 1-1.5hr drive to reach the railway market in time to the train pass through, so please be on time - it's worth getting up for we promise! The vendors here sell their goods along an active railway track with everything lined up a few inches from the track’s edge. You’ll get to see what happens when the train arrives - it can be crowded with both visitors and locals but we'll find you the best spot to view the train as well as taking a closer look at the local produce sold along the tracks. This area is known for coconut sugar plantations, we'll introduce you to a local lady whose family have been making this Thai staple ingredient for as long as she can remember. It's a bumpy road to her place - but we're sure you'll enjoy seeing a typical countryside home plantation and learning from her how the sugar is traditionally made - of course you can have a taste too! We'll take a small boat through the narrow canals before reaching the floating market seeing typical village houses on the khlongs (canals) along the way and enjoy a tasty treat bought from a boat vendor at the market. Back on land there'll be some free time to grab a quick lunch or shop for souvenirs before we head back to the city and drop you off back where we started next to National Stadium BTS station.
Pam, Pat & Team
We - Pam, Pat, Nai, Mond & A - are the Bangkok Urban Adventures team. We're licensed local guides based in the old city who love to share the quieter countryside old ways of life. We think the most unique market is Maeklong Railway Market - you have to see it to believe it when the train comes through. Damnoen Saduak is the biggest, most famous & most visited floating market, but at weekends we'll give you the option to see a more local, quieter floating market if it's open. We'd also love for you to meet a local lady who's family have been making sugar at their coconut plantation for generations - no crowds here!
