Wat je gaat doen
I will meet you at Seibu-Chichibu Station at 10:00 am. We will walk two blocks to Temple 13, where there is a rare Dharma wheel that contains all of the Buddhist sutras. Turning the giant wooden wheel three times is like chanting every sutra in the Buddhist Canon. From Temple 13 we'll drive 20 minutes to temple 27 and hike up a short, steep wooded trail to a 15 meter tall statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. The city and surrounding mountains unfold beneath her compassionate gaze, and yours. We will take a short break here before continuing along a forested ridge to the hidden inner sanctuary of Temple 26. The path is a little rugged, with roots and large stones in some places. The “hidden temple” is a small wooden hall on stilts (inspired by Kiyomizudera in Kyoto) that is built into a cave. From here we will descend two hundred moss covered stone steps, and head to temple 28 where we will have lunch before exploring the only “Batō Kannon” temple on the pilgrimage, and it’s inner sanctuary, a 140 meter limestone stalactite pit cave. Back in Chichibu, I will give you a map and point out places you can walk or bike to if you want to keep exploring on your own. There is an onsen in the station, and lots of trains back to Tokyo. Connect to spirit and nature in the sacred mountains of Chichibu. This experience only available April through the end of September.
I am recommended by the Chichibu Pilgrimage Association. I’ve been exploring and photographing the pilgrimage since moving to Chichibu in 2010. The Chichibu Kannon pilgrimage has become one of my life’s great passions. Zen is about immersing yourself in nature. “Let nature be your teacher”. Is a popular Zen concept. Experience the transformative ancient practice of Zen walking pilgrimage. I would love to be your guide. You can see more photos on Instagram at #pilgrimagejapan.

Another has a 15 meter tall Kannon. The last (popular with Samurai during the Edo period) has 140 meter stalactite pit cave as it’s inner sanctuary. *This experience is only available April through the end of September.
