Wat je gaat doen
Meet at Old Lodge Coffee House and do some introductions and safety brief. Walk down the glen. The initial focus will be on natural processes in the river and the alterations to allow the river to be used as a source of water power. Stop at the walled garden area to think about the challenges of working to build on a steep slope and discuss the role of horses used to remove timber during the renovation of the site. View the front drive and elevation Hermitage of Braid (house of the former estate) to briefly consider the landscape architecture and history of the house. Visit the small waterfall just downstream to explain how waterfalls come to be in particular places in the run of a river. Continue to the point where there is the clearest evidence of the former blocking of the channel by the bedrock, which was breached by glacial meltwaters. The final stop would be the old quarries, which included Agassiz's Rock. At this location in 1840 the famous Swiss geologist, glaciologist and palaeontologist Louis Agassiz found convincing evidence of glacial action and declared 'This is the work of ice'. The walk would return to the start point.
Blackford Glen is a site where I pursue many of my hobbies, including fell-running, orienteering, birdwatching, rock climbing and mountain biking and I know the glen in all weathers, all year round and by day and night I am a Chartered Geologist with a Ph. D. and a qualifiedOutdoor Leader. I have helped run geological excursions in the glen for learned societies. I helped to survey the physical geography of the Braid Burn, which runs through the glen, which incorporates the study of the human history of modifications to the stream and the areas adjacent to the channel

Waar je zult zijn
The whole experience is set in Blackford Glen, one of the ancient glacial meltwater channels in the landscape of Edinburgh. The river channel is our constant companion. Hermitage of Braid is a typical 19th century Scottish estate house, constructed from local stone, with outlying walled garden, stables and an ice house. Agassiz's Rock and Blackford Quarry are superb exposures of the rocks that make up the hills on either side of the glen.
