I am a wildlife biologist and professor of biology who has lived and worked with the local Samburu tribe for over 18 years.

The Samburu warrior guides are experienced professionals who have led hundreds of participants on adventures, including children with parents, and who personally know the mountain and its habitat intimately, as well as traditional local cultural traditions and flora and fauna.

While the hike could be considered strenuous, it accommodates guests of all levels of experience and fitness. The pace is set by the guest. Guest to Guide ratio: 4:1 depending on your group size.

Sabache Camp was an unique off the beaten track camp, secluded in the wild next to the the beautiful mountain ranges of Ololokwe. The highlight of the trip was the hike up the sacred mountain with the Samburu. Their knowledge on the nature, plant and animal life is exceptional and interesting. We were lucky enough to dodge the rain, so be prepared to bring along all weather hiking gear and clothes, as the rocks are very slippery when crossed on wet weather. The hike can be challenging for beginners and expect a 2-3 hour hike to the view point and 1h30 - 2hours hour downhill again. On arrival I would have liked to learn more about the expected orientation on the local culture and ecology, and the abache's ecosystem--it is an IBA (Important Bird Area), it would have been nice to learn more about this from the host on arrival, as we didn't have much to do on day 1. After the hike on day 2, we went to the Samburu tribe in the national park and witnessed a very special ceremony of the local boys, who returned from the bush with gum. The accommodation is a basic tented camp with no hot water, so be prepared for a nice cold shower that will wake you up nicely in the morning :) Also bring a lot of insect repellent, as mozzies and other insects to enter your tent at night and try not to keep your lights on. Overall a very special adventure with special people, highly recommended if you like off the beaten track experiences with the sense of adventure in the wild and elements of nature.

Absolutely epic. Authentic, original and not touristic. 10*stars. First of all the camp was really nice. Dont expect a luxury stay .You will be in the African jungle. You might have some bugs, cold water or electricity problems but the Scenery is amazing. It is located on the mountains, with really nice tents and good photography opportunities. We arrived 1st day after 6 hours drive from Nairobi had some lunch some rest and dinner as the weather was rainy. We woke up the 2nd day early in the morning(4:30 as we wanted to catch the sunrise up from the mountain) and start hiking with 2 massai Samburu warriors. They where very helpful ,knowledgeable and of course experienced. Stunning views and with the massai warriors up there we had some of the best photos of our life. After 5 hours totally we came back to the camp and headed 4 km away to another Massai Samburu clan that had an initiation ceremony happening every 15 years. That was not in the schedule and we were really lucky to be there. Between Lunch and dinner we played some games like spear throwing with the tribe and had lots of fun.Next morning after breakfast we headed back to Nairobi.on the road there are some shops that you can buy wooden souvenirs. Be aware of 2 things. First is that in the back of every shop there is an antique section with much more original stuff. I think all the others where like industrialized. Of course handmade and beautiful but I guess thousands of tourists will have the same. Secondly you can bargain a lot. I bought some antiques from starting price 380 usd down to 70usd. And from 100usd down to 15usd. I am seriously considering going back with friends again.Definately recommended…

Overall this was an incredible experience. The location was stunning - set in the heartlands of Samburu territory - and the Moran warriors gave us a special insight into their culture. Our hike up to the sacred mountain was a lot of fun, the warriors were entertaining with a great sense of humour. They were also very knowledgeable and responsive to the myriad questions we had for them! Our only reservation about the stay was the lack of water (we could neither wash our hands properly nor use the tap to refill water bottles)... however, this is just a side note which in no way lessened our experience. Don’t expect much if you’re veggie/vegan either. We had mentioned our dietary requirements before arriving but were left disappointed with the non-meat dishes provided to us on both nights of our stay. All in all we had an amazing time and would recommend to anyone with an interest in Samburu culture. Ian, our host, even managed to get us a free safari at the local conservation area to conclude our visit! Thank you to everyone at Sabache Camp!
