Wat je gaat doen
Welcome to our farm located in a beautiful landscape, rich in history and abundant with varieties of wildlife and livestock all set in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The farm sits perched high in the Lyvennet valley, overlooking the Pennines, Yorkshire Dales and Eastern Fells of the Lake District. You'll get to experience first hand the challenges faced as we try to farm sustainably and complementary to the local environment with its rich abundance of wildlife. We'll talk candidly about the challenges to evolve the farming business in a every increasing profit and performance driven world. How it's becoming ever harder to farm environmentally when faced with mass market pressures such as supermarkets and conglomerated forcing the demise of small, ecological family farms. This "hands on" hike around the farm and local landscape will hopefully provide you with balanced insight into the often unknown aspect of agriculture and the generations of passion that went into food production and the local culture. But also the stark reality of the future of farming and small family farms. I hope to provide insightful and though provoking talk about my practical rural knowledge, the difficult decisions of having to leave the farm to seek employment elsewhere but fundamentally help inform people about the great work family farms undertake for the Agricultural and Environment.
I'm a farmers son who has been involved in agriculture all my life. Growing up on the mixed livestock and cereals farm located in the Westmorland Dales National Park, working with my dad gave me a solid grounding to head away and develop my career in the Agricultural Industry, firstly studying at a UK Agricultural College and then University where I finished gaining a employment with a multinational company within the agricultural sector. During my spare time, weekends and holidays I've continued to work on the farm supporting the business through very challenging times such as 'foot and mouth', tb and generally difficult trading conditions. The farm emphasis has always to farm with the environment, livestock welfare and local wildlife as the main priorities of the business creating vibrant ecology.
Waar je naartoe gaat
We will walk around the farm looking at nature, some livestock all dependant on seasons and how the farming system is ruled by season and weather. I talk about the "day to day" challenges, the realities of growing crops and livestock for food productions. You'll get the opportunity to walk around fields, look at hedgerows, streams, crops and tree. Admire the beautiful scenery and experience the varied weather of the Cumbrian hills.
