Wat je gaat doen
All skill levels are welcome and no previous drumming or musical experience is required! Most participants in this class have never touched a drum in their life. This is a fun and outdoor hands-on workshop but spots are very limited in order to keep the group small. The format of this workshop is a drum circle (instruments and chairs will be provided), during which you'll learn the history of traditional African drumming, then learn how to interpret, play and improvise easy-to-follow patterns as a group and individually. We'll first spend a few minutes getting to know each other. We'll then learn more about our instrument, the djembe, and its origin and meaning in the African culture. We'll then ease into the ABCs of djembe playing, then slowly progress until we all feel comfortable playing as a group. From there and for the rest of the workshop, we'll learn a few solo and group patterns, and learn to tell stories with our instruments. Finally, we'll open the floor up to more rhythmic exploration and some fun improvisation from each participant. After the hour-long group session, you will be free to spend some more time on your own or with me to perfect your technique, have more drumming fun as a group, or ask any additional questions. You can also leave whenever you'd like to explore the rest of Golden Gate Park: there's always to see/do.
Twelve years ago, I left my home country of the Congo, Africa, to travel the world full time, learning about other cultures and telling untold stories as a filmmaker, photographer, and musician. That journey eventually brought me to San Francisco which is home for now. Along the way, music is what has reminded me of my actual home, whether it was performing for a crowd or playing alone. I am a part-time musician and creativity enthusiast, and I currently work for a technology company in the city to empower people to be more creative. I'm fluent in 7 languages and can play a dozen musical instruments. African drumming has a special place in my heart though, and I love teaching easy-to-follow traditional drumming patterns and their meanings while sharing an appreciation for this ancient art form as a tool for human connection and language.
