Wat je gaat doen

We will meet in Campo de Fiori, the square that every morning is the location of an historical food market, and in the evening sees people gathering for the "happy hour" in one of the bars nearby. From there we will head to our first stop: a family shop of cold cuts, where you can taste different kinds of salami, from barolo wine to truffle flavour, all accompanied by a sip of local wine. Leaving the square, we will go to the Jewish Ghetto, where you will learn the history of this small quarter and the experiences lived by its community during World War 2. You won't leave the Ghetto without trying the famous Jewish artichoke, or the Roman zucchini flower, typical Roman/Jewish appetisers. From one stop to the following, save room for the other tastings: we will pass by an old bakery that makes one of the best pizza in town and if you are lucky, with the wind in favour, you might smell it already along the way.
We will see the place where according to the chronicles of the past, Julius Caesar was assassinated, the ruins of a Roman wellness center, and listen to funny histories on the monuments that I will show you, including the Pantheon. When the tour will get there, the Pantheon will be closed, but I will give you all the main information you need to enjoy a visit on your own. You will learn lots of things, 3 hours of history, food, local culture, and fun!

Hi! My name is Virginia and I'm a tour leader, specialised in street food tours. Visiting a new place is always a pleasure, and if you can discover a city also through its food, it's amazing. This is the aim of my Rome Street Food Tour: a 3-hour sightseeing in one of the best known areas of the city center, with tasting stops to flavour samples of the most famous Italian and local street food: from the crunchy sliced pizza to the Roman supplì, a fried rice ball, and much more. On the way, I will tell you anecdotes on the places that we are going to see and will discover hidden corners and histories that you can't find on your own. Mattia, Alessia, and Ruggero collaborate with me in doing the tours. Follow me and let's go, or better..."andiamo"!

Major disappointment. My schedule opened and I booked this. I was very excited about described aspects such as sampling meat and cheese, which never happened. I was told I would have to be fully masked for the entire time to comply with law. The law does not say you need to be masked in public, with 1 m separation; only inside (ironically the only place he said I could take my mask off was inside since they were restaurants. While he may be required to wear a mask while working I certainly am not and I was the only person so it’s not you could argue that it was a group thing. It was 36 Celsius and I was to walk around in circles for three hours (the tour covers a very small area but does so in circles). Often places were closed so he would just walk me more to no were but a bigger circle to come back and see if was then open (the fried rice ball place). Most of the food was fried or greasy which was gross. I didn’t want pasta which is why I picked this tour but he brought me to what I can only describe as a Subway (you know, Jared and the sandwiches) for pasta. I declined. What’s worse about the whole thing is that the CDC Europe, which Airbnb claims to follow expressly suggests that touching your mask may be linked to higher spread of infection. The guide touched his face at least 100 times (well I stopped counting at 100) because it didn’t fit him and he kept adjusting it. He used hands sanitizer exactly twice. So while he was lecturing me about mask usage his behavior was more likely to spread COVID. What was a unique pizza eatery. What I got was “wait out here and I’ll go get some” and he care back with four pieces of something while I waited on the street, in a mask, in the inferno, like an idiot. I wanted to leave from the beginning but didn’t want to lose my money... as it progressed the food wasn’t very good (like I said mostly fried and joints that were not unique); he even bragged at one point “we do a lot of walking but we don’t go so far.” That wasn’t amusing to me being already pretty frustrated by the experience. I love Airbnb experiences - and the host didn’t actually lead it and looking from other comments that may be common for her; maybe Emanuele had a bad day and is otherwise a great guide. I wasn’t impressed; I resented being forced to wrest a mask in the open public with no one near me; I didn’t like being offered pasta at a fast food pasta when that wasn’t on the menu, I wanted to try meat and cheese which didn’t happen and I feel like it was a disaster. That’s my opinion anyways.

A few days after this street food tour we met a friend who was born in Rome and lived there for many years. He told us that we definitely have to try all the local dishes and continued to name them. We told him "We already tasted all of them at this great street food and sightseeing our". So, to sum it up: You really get to try all the special street food dishes that Rome has to offer!

We tried many tasty typically Roman street foods during the tour while learning about elements of the history of Rome, such as the fate of Giordano Bruno, the assassination of Julius Caesar, or the Jewish Ghetto. Two days after this tour, I met up with a friend who is a local from Rome and he gave me suggestions for which local foods I should really try - and I had already tasted ALL of them on this street food tour :)

Our tour was hosted by Alessia, she was funny, passionate and professional. We were lucky engouh to only have 5 of us on the tour! We tried some wonderful food (great portions) drink and we were given some in depth historical information about Roma from Alessia along the way. I only wished it went longer! What more could you want!

Super fun tour with Mattia (Virginia wasn't available). Getting to know a handful of local casual food gems and a tasting at one of the food booths at the market is a fabulous way to start off in a new city. We wanted to return to all. We also appreciated the historical call outs along the way. It was a sweet group of folks and the perfect size of 11. Highly recommend!
